Carry out First Offices

A practical knowledge of how to carry out First Offices enables the Funeral Director to present the deceased person in a visually acceptable and respectful manner, not only by restoring dignity to the deceased, but also by bringing a comforting reassurance to the bereaved family at a time when most needed.

Who is the course for?

This one day programme is designed to enhance the basic skills of funeral service professionals employed in all sectors of the industry.

Those who have already taken advantage of the programme include reception staff, driver bearers, funeral directors and casual employees.

The AIM of the course:
To enhance the skill levels of participants in order to increase their ability and effectiveness as team members.

1. Personal Protective Equipment:

Objectives:
  To identify equipment appropriate to the circumstances
  How to minimize pathogenic transfer
  

2.Working Area:

Objectives:

·        To recognize and minimize hazards

·        The correct preparation of instruments

·        The safe transfer of the deceased

·         Dealing with the possibility of infectious disease

3. Identification:

Objectives:

·        To recognize the importance of correct identification

·        To understand the importance of adhering to laid down procedures

·        Dealing with special requirements such as clothing or jewellery

·        Dealing with discrepancies

4. Signs of Death:

Objectives:

·        How to recognize that death has taken place

·        How to carry out tests for death

5. First Offices. The procedure:

Objectives:

·        The importance of maintaining the dignity of the deceased

·        The importance of the hands of the deceased

·        The breaking down of rigor mortis

·        Dealing with lesions and areas requiring special attention

·        Caution when dealing with special conditions such as arthritis

·        The care of bodily orifices

·        Special care regarding eyelids and hair

6. Special Techniques:

Objectives:
      ·        Dealing with sunken eyes

·        Alternative methods of mouth closure

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the programme the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify necessary equipment in order to carry out procedures covered
  2. Don appropriate protective clothing
  3. Minimise hazards within their working area
  4. Use prescribed lifting and handling techniques
  5. Check identification and employer/client instructions
  6. Recognise signs of death
  7. Carry out tests for death
  8. Safely dispose of clinical waste
  9. Deal with jewellery and other personal effects
  10. Break down rigor mortis
  11. Render the surface of the body aseptic
  12. Deal effectively with all bodily orifices
  13. Use and be aware of alternative mouth closure techniques
  14. Use basic cosmetics

A ‘Certificate of Attendance’ will be issued for CPD purposes to each candidate who completes the programme.

Courses normally take place in the working environment. Groups are kept to a minimum, usually between 1 and 6 participants, in order to facilitate learning, since the programme is quite intensive.
